A great way to start off our boys seasons 3-0. After 3 rainouts we finally got our first day in with great weather. They boys took home 1st place in the 4 team Invite, beating Alexandria 4-1, Shelbyville 3-2, and Batesville 4-1. The team was lead by a stellar performance by our singles players who went 3-0 for the day. Amazing job to Gavin Guffey, Matthew Haas, and Charlie Park. Next match is Monday against Lawrence Central.

The boys tennis team ran into one of the toughest boys teams this season. A very strong Brebeuf team brought a strong team taking down the Trojans 5-0. I would look for Brebeuf to make some noise in the state tournament. We look forward to our next match Thursday against Park Tudor at Park.

Finally after a week of cancelled matches due to heat the men’s tennis team played a match. We won 3-2 in a nail bitter. The singles players all swept with wins great job to Gavin Guffey, Matthew Haas, and Charlie Park. Looking forward to a few good days of practice and a match against LN Thursday.

Great win tonight by the boys team. Today was a great day for Chatard versus Roncalli with both the tennis team and football team with wins. The tennis team is getting ready for Cathedral Tuesday night.

Tough 5-0 loss for the Trojans tonight. Cathedral is a strong top 8 team in the state. This was our first look at Cathedral before we play them in city again. We look to avenge some of our losses in two weeks at city.

Great 5-0 sweep of Ritter today. All 3 singles won 6-0, 6-0. Doubles teams of Brady Leppert/ Alex Fowler and Keaton Kaehr/Nate O’Brien pulled out 3rd set victories to give the Trojans a 5-0 clean sweep.

Great 3-2 win versus Covenant Christian. Our singles players all played amazing frat job to Gavin, Matthew, and Charlie for their tough play. Next match up International School and ready for our Senior Night. Come enjoy senior night and enjoy some food from the Trojan Horse.

A great 5-0 win for the Trojans to put them 10-2 for the season with a few more matches to go. Next match is against Terre Haute South at Plainfield High School.

Another tough 3-2 win for the boys team today. A clean sweep for our 3 singles players.

The Trojans had a great match with # 1 ranked Carmel. This is the first time Chatard has played Carmel in a dual match. Junior Matthew Haas had an amazing three set win at # 2 singles. Next up for the Trojans will be Triton Central Monday.

Another great win tonight over Triton Central. Moving the Trojans to 12-3 for the season. Great job to our three singles players Gavin, Matthew, and Charlie with 3 clutch wins to give us the win. Next up and last team match before sectionals is New Palestine Thursday.

The Trojans lost a super close 3-2 match tonight to close out the regular season. Great wins by juniors Gavin Guffey and Matthew Haas. Senior clutch player Charlie Park lost a tough third set match. They end their season 12-4. One of the all time best regular season records in school tennis history. Great job Trojans. Next up is City Championships at Riverside Park Saturday with Championship Finals at Devon Country Club Monday.

The Trojans lost a great match tonight to reigning state champs North Central. All positions gave it 100% effort. Number 2 singles player Matthew Haas pulled out a 6–2, 6-3 win. We end 12-6 in what was a great season.

Boys tennis had a hard fought 5-0 win against a tough Ben Davis team!!

The boys had almost a perfect win today by winning 5-0. In 5 matches Chatard won 60 games to 2 for LC. If we include JV it would be 78 games to 2. A real team effort by everyone. The boys are set to take on Brebeuf tomorrow so come to Devon Country Club to cheer them on.

Tough loss for the boys tonight to the 21st state ranked Brebeuf. The score was closer then it showed. We look forward to our next match Thursday against 16th state ranked Park Tudor.

Tough 4-1 loss for the Trojans. Everyone played great and gave max effort. Shout out to Gavin Guffey for a big win at #1 singles. It has been over 20 years since Chatard has beat Park at #1 singles.

Tough 5-0 loss against Guerin tonight. High five to William Pruitt and William Dietrick who lost a hard fought 3rd set match. Next match up is Lawrence North Thursday.

The boys had a great 5-0 win today against a much improved Scecina team! Next up Homestead Invitational in Fort Wayne Saturday.

Boys had a decisive 5-0 win tonight against Covenant Christian. It was a great match getting them ready for the City Championship which will start Saturday!! We play Heritage Christian tomorrow night in what will be a very competitive match. Come cheer us on!!

Unbelievable 5-0 win for our boys against New Palestine!! In our last home match of the season we beat New Pal for the first time in 10 years! Bigggg high five to Gavin Guffey, Matthew Haas, and Alex Konvolinka who all swept singles in 3rd set wins!! We look forward to our City Championship which begin Saturday at Riverside Park. Great win for the boys tonight 5-0 versus Tech without losing a single game in all 5 matches. Onto Sectional Semifinals versus Cathedral. I’m guessing it will be a barn burner!!

What a great end to the season at sectionals. The boys lost a close 4-1 match to Cathedral. Matthew Haas had a super close third set loss which could have gone either way. Shout out to our 7 seniors William Dietrich, William Pruitt, Alex Konvolinka, Gabe Martinez, Jamie O’Briens, Charlie Biggs, and William Borowski who played amazing all year. Every practice they brought energy and enthusiasm. They will be greatly missed next year.

A good night with a lot of different looks on the roster. Some new and old doubles combinations, a few people getting their first experience in a ‘varsity’ singles set. Need to keep an eye on Engelman and his shoulder.

The Trojans defeated Lebanon 5-0 after a full three hour battle. The Trojans saw a total of three courts go three sets. #1s Gavin Guffey (9) started his high school career out in a 70 minute 7-5 first set that saw several strategies implored, including a three game badminton stint! He figured his opponent out, stayed patient, worked one shot ahead, and rolled to a swift 6-2 second set win. #2s Matthew Haas (9) also in his first ever varsity match took a moment to get his feet wet before defeating his opponent in three 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. #1d William Pruitt (11) / William Dietrick (11) saw a 6-1 first set slip away after a 2-6 second set lapse in serving. The duo overcame a match riddled with unforced errors (62 to be exact!) and overcame a 3-4 deficit to clinch 6-4 in the third. #3s Charlie Park (10) was the last player in the clubhouse also playing in his first ever varsity match. Charlie went the distance 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 winning his first ever third setter. #2d Alex Konvolinka (11) / Gabe Martinez (11) took care of business only losing one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 win. Despite a few mental lapses, it was a good home opener at that!

The Trojans continue an impressive start to the season going 10-0 at varsity matches across their first two starts. #1s Gavin Guffey (9) found himself in a tight match against a fellow freshman. Gavin had an impressive 39+ shot stretch of no unforced errors against Joshua, which pushed Christener further than his shoulder allowed him to go tonight. Gavin won after the Giants retired at 6-2 BCHS in the first set due to injury. #2s Matthew Haas (9) cruised in a clinic 6-1, 6-2. These two are going to be fun teammates to watch as they continue to push each other over the next four years. #3s Charlie Park (10) won his first career varsity tiebreak in his first set to remain 1/1 in career tiebreaks 7-6(1), 6-4. What a promising 9-9-10 singles lineup!
#1d William Dietrick (11) / William Pruitt (11) got off to a hot start before losing steam in the second set. They need to be reminded of Coach Clark’s Mantra! However, the two were never really tested despite their mental lapse, ultimately winning 6-0, 6-4. #2d Alex Konvolinka (11) / Gabe Martinez (11) made focused and quick work of their opponents 6-0, 6-2.

Another impressive showing by varsity, as they remain undefeated as a team on the season and 14-1 in their opening three matches. A 98.8F court temperature didn’t slow anyone down. The new courts at Lawrence Central are something else. Post-tensionsed stress concrete is the next greatest thing in tennis courts and although they play slower, man oh man are they nice. #1s Guffey (9) faced down a heavy serving senior 6-3, 6-4 in match that showed how important first serve percentages (and return of serves) really are. Way to go Gavin! #2s Haas (9) continued his quest for extra time on court, going the distance 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 (called 10pt third set tiebreak since the match was decided 3-1 at this point). #1d Dietrick (11) / Pruitt (11) earned the first WHITE BALLS of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 performance. Way to not relax, get comfortable, and let up in the second set! #2d Konvolinka (11) / Martinez (11) started making more unforced errors than not in the second set before pulling out a 6-0, 6-4 win. We talked about taking advantage of your opponents positioning towards the very end of this match, if they’re going to give you the backhand lane, take advantage of it!

In attempt #2, there was definitely less lighting, especially none that emanated from our side of the court! Singles took a thundering winning five games across six sets in three matches. #1s Gavin Guffey (9) fell to a sophomore transfer who came in from Carmel’s JV team. He was the longest match of the night by at least a margin of 30 minutes, and it was a 1-6, 2-6 defeat. That’s something else to be so deep that you could send a JV player away and they play #1s for Park Tudor! Zach Engelman (12) stepped in for his first varsity match of the year but met a rapid exit. Need to keep working on his consistency, the short match was made even shorter due to our early mistakes. #1d William Dietrick (11)/William Pruitt (11) gave it their best against PT’s strongest position, but couldn’t come up with an answer for the Panthers’ serving. #2d Alex Konvolinka (11)/Gabe Martinez (11) went down in the closet battle of the night 3-6, 3-6.

I think several guys would say they’d like this night back. It was special to see Chris Sciaudone return to coaching in the midst of his battle with brain cancer. Todd Metzger assisted many of the coaching duties this evening. #1s Guffey was in this one against a young sophomore, but our serving (especially second serving) couldn’t quite get us over the hump. Gavin’s consistency on the ground has been remarkable during this stretch, but it hasn’t netted the winner:error ratio you need to beat a #1s player on a top 20 team. Many more chances to come! #2s Haas met a quick exit. We need to avoid letting our mental game snowball through the course of a match. He’s only a freshman we must remind ourselves, PPR!
The team who wants this one back. #2d Konvolinka/Martinez. Serving percentages will climb through the season and two up formations will get better, but not in tonights’ 4-6, 7-5, 2-6 loss.

This might be who we are this year, the guys need to dig deep and decide if that’s what they are content with. A winless LN squad threw out their top three players in 1-2-3 singles (senior, senior, junior) and our guys (freshman, freshman, senior) just couldn’t match their strength and consistency. Arguably their best position, #2s, was the tallest orders tonight. William Pruitt/William Dietrick took advantage of a weaker doubles lineup and put away point after point at the night en route to a 6-2, 6-0 win. #2d Konvolinka/Martinez saw their second match in a row slip away. During the first set, in which they won 6-2, the two played smart agressive doubles. Their momentum slipped away as they relaxed, then got tight, and missed key service opportunities as they dropped the next two sets 3-6, 2-6.

#1s freshman from Cathedral, whoa. The sound of his ball was on a different level, but so was the humility. We learned a lot as a team from anyone who watched this court tonight. Proud of our freshman for knowing the rules, holding his ground, and calling a violation before coach even could late in the second set! #2s from the Irish was sick, but there were 13 other seniors on the roster that amply filled in. The big win of the night came from the #1d court of William Dietrick/William Pruitt. We also learned a lot from this match and will continue to use this drive us moving forward. What a great showing of support from our entire team, locked in cheering their teammates on, and they rushed the court afterwards! The good guys won 1-6, 7-5, 6-1. We could see this team two more times this season at this position, and the next two matter even more. We know we can do it, we just need to stay poised.

Five varsity courts and the guys lost only one total game in ten sets. The Raiders were overcome by speed and a Trojan team motivated to get better. Each guy reported something unique to their own game that they would practice and improve during the evening. That focus helped the Trojans to their most dominant team performance of the season. The freshman learned coaches favorite sequence and got to practice it a little pre-match. Let’s hope they remember when the going gets tough heading into the weekend!

As a rater, I’m putting Whiteland into the top 25 after seeing them play today. They came out and swept us just like a top 25 team would do. Our singles were tentative against strong players during the opening round. In warm ups, it didn’t look this lopsided. But, when it came to pressuring Whiteland and executing high percentage shots while limiting errors within our #1s and #2s matches, we were shown off court 0-6, 1-6 and 0-6, 0-6 respectively. In his first singles match of the year, #3s William Dietrick hung around against a solid freshman and the coach’s son, dropping a 2-6, 2-6 decision. Martinez/Konvolinka got their first taste of what life is like at #1d and I’d guess they’ll report they are happy to be playing #2d! We need to be convinced we are best when playing two up, but against a hard hitting smart doubles team that likes to be two up and is already convinced of that, we fell 1-6, 0-6. I think the best thing these two can do is work on their serves and first volleys. If we can get them stronger in both of those departments, the close matches remaining in our schedule might start to fall our way. #2d Charlie Park/Jamie O’Brien saw their first varsity doubles court of their careers today and we hope they stay hungry enough to make another appearance!

Congrats, boys! I don’t think we realized the gravity of this match while in it! Winning courts were as follows:
#1s Gavin Guffey 6-4, 6-4. In what might be a school record, if not IHSAA record, Gavin served out the first set with the final point culminating in a 104 shot rally. Some shots, the wind might have blown harder than the ball speed, but my oh my, when the going gets tight, the tight get going! He was the deciding point after it was all tied up 2-2.
#2s Matthew Haas upended a senior and kept his cool on the way to a 6-3, 6-4 win. He did a really nice job using his lefty forehand cross court and lefty slice serve to his neutralize his opponents backhand. The guy kept a consistent slice ball back in play, but had a hard time actually hurting Matthew with it. Instead, Matthew would force him on the run and into making an error.
#1d William Dietrick/William Pruitt took home a dominating 6-2, 6-0 win. These guys were happy to be back on court together, I think their cycles are even starting to sync!

#3s Charlie Park had a heart breaker match fall against him 6-2, 2-6, 7-10. It meant a lot to coach to see how much this kid was invested in his match. He has gotten so close, so many times this year. I’m confident what he’s learning at #3s right now, will really make for a great career as he develops his game and grows into an upperclassman.
#2d Konvolinka/Martinez fell in an equal heartbreak 1-6, 6-4, 12-14. The two came back from a remarkable 6-9 deficit in the tiebreak to win four straight points. After having a match point up 10-9, you thought the storybook ending was going to go our way, and they got just a little bit rattled with a call. It’s the beauty and frustration of our sport, tennis can be such a head game. With lack of officials on court, pretty tough to tell whether that call was accurate. No matter what, you have to be willing to implore a tennis players greatest ability, and that is the ability to forget. What is out of your control, is just that, it is out of your control. Step up to the line, focus on what you can that very next point, on your half of the court and get to work. Make sure one point doesn’t end up costing you more. Nonetheless, they did a great job mentally rebounding. They’re 0-3 in three set matches this year, and we expect that all that does is make them grow in your game because they get tired of feeling this way!

Big outing for the Trojans in their quest for a defining season. A statement win at all positions tonight that cements a piece of the puzzle in place in the pursuit for city seeds. #3s Zach Engelman earned his first career varsity win this evening with a 6-1, 6-4 outing. Will be excited to see his match metrics when IBM Watson is finished with the calculations and final tallies. There should be a telling difference between set #1 and set #2. Solid play from singles players who went out and did their job. Doubles swept in dominant fashion. Go Trojans!

Heartbreaking loss tonight against a team we thought we could overtake. Trojan Doubles swept the evening with #1d first court off going to the Trojans. Second point bled away at #3s to Mt. Vernon as a sophomore proved to be a little more consistent than our senior. Third point swung back our way as #2d closed it up in a second set tiebreak, almost letting their guys back in it. Two courts left and BCHS just needed one to fall our way. #1s for Mt. Vernon was a pretty solid all around sophomore and got us pretty handedly. So, it comes down to #2s, frosh vs. frosh. All eyes on Haas as he must force a third set to draw back even…but it didn’t go our way dropping a 6-7(6), 5-7 match. Man oh man do we wish we could have that one back! We learn and grow one day better as our freshman are gaining invaluable match pressure experience.

Big 5-0 win against a much improved Scecina team. A transfer student from Brazil boosted their entire depth and gave us a nice run. We know exactly how that works because our two freshman allowed our roster to bump down two spots, Scecina only got a one bump! Gavin Guffey fought off a tight first set where his low and slow won the smoke-off 7-5, 6-0. With their former #1s playing #2, Matthew Haas had to grit out a 6-4, 6-3 win. William Pruitt was in at #3s cruising to his first singles win on the season. Alex Konvolinka & Charlie Park bumped up into #1d. Jamie O’Brien & Alex Fowler eagerly played at #2d getting some first varsity PT this year.

Oooh what a night (Cue the music!). A HUGE 3-2 win indoors. This will help define our City Tournament and conference standings as we preemptively squeezed this one in at West Indy on back to back rainy nights. Thank you Lucas! #1s for Heritage we are happy to see go as he was an orders of magnitude a greater competitor than last year. Wonder to think what another year of improvement out of him looks like and glad we don’t have to find out! Guffey will learn a lot from him as the 3+ ft of net clearance J. Lemming exhibited will be so essential for BOTH our frosh to continue to develop. Right now, they still need a little prodding to back away from the low and tights! #2s Haas faced off against a substitute for Tiernon tonight, edging out the Eagles in their pursuit of the team win. #3s Engelman was outgunned by the pace, consistency, and quickness of their sophomore. It will be interesting to see how Z. Lemming assumes the role of 2s player next year for Haas to take on, while Guffey navigates Tiernon.

Dadgummit. We just can’t get over the hump at New Pal. But, they threw out NINE seniors against us tonight on their senior night. Now, we didn’t win a single match at JV against their non-seniors, but they’ll all be moving up into varsity with little varsity experience…and we don’t lose a single player from the lineup we played tonight. Jean is a great coach, so we know she’ll have them ready. But, like any good Cubs fan, maybe there’s next year?!? We went 1-1 in tiebreaks, with Haas wanting that second set one back after streaking to an early and strong lead!

Slightly disappointing finish, I know our guys felt the feels. If you would have asked us if only one position was playing for a city finals, we would have scoffed at you! Heritage Christian avenged their regular season dual match loss to us to upend us in three spots, rightfully earning their way to a 2nd place runner up finish. Covenant came out with a clean 4th place finish, although I had some disagreement about the singles lineup they used. All I saw, their #3s player was the best player in their singles line up on that single Saturday. #1d wishes they had their championship match back having a little more sleep running through their veins. #2d wishes they had that second set tiebreak back, and especially their third set.

The conversations that we had regarding strategy and leadership were the very best I have been a part of. How well they reflected on their personal growth and turned that into a desire to be better people, better teammates, and better players was just a very humble process to be a part of.

What an amazing end to the season. A beautiful day at #5 state ranked North Central. These guys better be hungry for next season. They saw what they can do today and that is hang with the best. We have the foundation in place to do something really special next year. Given maturity in the mental fortitude department (and that comes with putting yourselves in pressure match play positions), these boys could pull off a first in BCHS Boys Tennis Program history, a top 30 state ranking in 2022. I think we were just inside the top 45 this year. That’s something to be proud…if that doesn’t make you want to elevate this entire team to say you were a part of that, I mean come on man!

11 wins and some incredible character building that came from this year. We lose our one senior, and return the rest of the starting line up. Up on three…………..!!!

The Trojans returned to play for the first time in 2020 and began their season with an all-around strong mental performance. #1d Sam McCarthy-Young (12)/James Duncan (12) took a 6-2, 6-4 win for the Trojans’ first point. Close behind was #2d William Pruitt (10)/Alex Konvolinka (10) who saw their match go 6-3, 6-1. Grant Millman (12) at #1s took a close lead in the first set 7-5. Throughout the second set, neither player could hold serve and the final five games were each a break. Grant took a commanding lead in the tiebreak and didn’t look back, winning 7-6(2) to clinch the third point for the Trojans. The fourth point came from #2s Sam Annakin, after falling 3-6 in the first set, collected himself and took a 6-3, 5-0 lead. Sam admits he ‘got comfortable’ and strayed away from his game plan, landing him in a tight 5-4 third set. He closed it out ultimately getting off court with a 6-4 dub.

Against a stronger Ben Davis team than we have seen in a few years, the Trojans kept their cool and prevailed on all courts 5-0.

An ‘oh what could have been!’ The Trojans fall 1-4 on the evening after ultimately possessing a chance to win the match 4-1. The sole point earned for the Trojans was an outstanding performance by #2d sophomores William Pruitt & Alex Konvolinka 6-3, 6-4. Grant Millman saw the light tonight, putting together a heck of a match at #1s. En route to a 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-10 defeat, Millman showed incredible patience and grit. He forced his opponent to beat him in 20 ball rallies time and time again, an outstanding feat considering the history of the name on the front of his opponents jersey. Sam Annakin at #2s had an equally impressive singles battle tonight also seeing an incredible number of 15-20 ball rallies. However, after winning the first set in confident stride 6-2, the Panther rallied to overcome his deficit taking Sam in three sets, 4-6, 4-6.

Varsity saw straight losses come on all courts despite close efforts by #2s Sam Annakin (4-6, 4-6) & #2d William Pruitt/William Dietrick (2-6, 6-7(5)).

The Wildcats put out their three best players at 1-2-3 singles tonight and cleaned house on the Trojans. The closest match was Sam Annakin at #2s, falling 3-6, 4-6. The sole Trojan victory came from an awesome performance by #1d Sam McCarthy-Young/James Duncan winning 6-4, 7-5. Sam McCarthy-Young moved exceptionally well at the net after spending the day before grinding through doubles drills. This earned him the Player of the Week award and shiny new blue tee!

Ethan Pratt (12) took on Levi Wojtalik at #1s and just keeps improving on the year. He played his best tennis to date this season, but Wojtalik was firing on all cylinders. Sam McCarthy-Young/James Duncan were in at #2d and fell down 4-6 in the first set before battling back to a 7-6(6) second set tiebreak win. The duo couldn’t keep up their dominance at the net and dropped a 3-6 third set.

Sam Annakin/James Duncan were in at #1d and took home a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Grant Millman was heavily tested at #1s where he had a very up and down match. He started up 1-0, but fell behind 1-4. He then strung together the next 11/12 games to take a 7-5, 5-1 lead. He let Mark Baker hang around before closing out the second set 6-3. Proud of him as he dug deep and found his way to win. This was Grant’s best match in holding true to his consistency and only taking dictating the point after it had developed into a eight ball plus rally.

#10 Guerin is a tough foe this year. Despite their #1 being out again (but this time due to the ACT), their freshman got the best of Grant Millman 1-6, 0-6. Sam Annakin couldn’t quite repeat his challenging performance last week @ Guerin dropping his match 2-6, 1-6. James Duncan was in at #3s, and despite his best attempt, fell 0-6, 0-6. Sam McCarthy-Young/Ethan Pratt in at #1d just couldn’t hold serve enough to go the distance falling 1-6, 3-6. William Pruitt/William Dietrick in at #2d played such a fun match to watch. They were kings of the sandy court 9 and did their best to test Guerin for two solid hours winning the first set 7-5, while falling behind 3-6 in the second. They ultimately dropped a third set tiebreak 5-10.

The promise that had shone through all day since 10am finally came to fruition about 4:30pm on Saturday. The first win of the day came to the kings of the sand trap on court 9, where William Dietrick/William Pruitt took charge 6-1, 6-1. Ethan Pratt/Sam McCarthy-Young at #1d were outmaneuvered at the net and on their serves, falling 0-6, 3-6. The nerves started to tighten up as Alex Konvolinka dropped his #3s match 2-6, 6-1,8-10. Grant Millman was next court home, earning a 6-4, 3-6, 12-10 win at #1s. Sam Annakin put just enough together after a shaky middle to win in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and clinched a 3-2 decision for the match.

Terre Haute North put out a tough 1-2 singles line up besting our guys in straight sets. James Duncan saw the daylight and was determined to earn the W at #3s, but it was just a matter of needing a few more penetrating serves. He fell by a single break each set, 4-6, 4-6. Sam McCarthy-Young/Ethan Pratt faced a #1d team who’s aggression at the net took our guys by surprise. The kings of court 9 were at it again coming out of the gates hot to take the first set 6-3. The two let serving problems plague them in the second set falling 3-6. They jumped out to a rather large early lead in the tiebreak, but let THN hang around too long and come back. THN served out the match to dash the hopes of our Trojans boys in a 9-11 defeat.

Grant Millman at #1s took care of business against a fellow senior 6-4, 6-3. Sam Annakin at #2s pulled through in a third set barn burner 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. The sophomore duo of Dietrick/Pruitt came through clutch in a third at #2d 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-2 after Covenant pulled a wonky line up on us and put their #1s player who had played nearly the full season at that position suddenly in at #2d. Hmmm!!

Muterspaugh cleaned up his record on the Annakin boys and let us know about it! Boys took a pretty clean licking at Mt. Vernon’s new courts this year. #1s Millman was the closest singles match, falling 4-6, 4-6 after suffering what we later learned a wrist injury chasing a ball into the fence. #2d Dietrick/Pruitt almost took down two seniors after winning the first set 6-4, but fell 6-10 in a third set tie break. Impressive new facility, hoping the BCHS tennis facility looks just like it some day…..Hmmmmm!!!

Great rebound match looking towards city. We never look ahead, but this one felt good for seeds in city. Duncan/McCarthy-Young & Dietrick/Pruitt each snagged a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1d and #2d, respectively. Millman took the the lone clean score at #1s 6-0, 6-0.

The #21 state ranked Braves showed us a good look at a top 25 team. Pretty upperclassmen heavy match between the two teams, looking forward to this one next year. They can put out a good singles line up, but will our young but experienced depth carry us home? To be continued……..

A young Lebanon team gave us a run this evening. Millman got a WHITE BALL 6-3, 6-0 W!! Pratt in at #3s had the most entertaining match of the evening, however, I’m sure his parents and our coaching staffs new gray hairs might not 100% agree! He had a few ebbs and flows, but pulled it out when we needed him 10-7 in the third. McCarthy-Young/Duncan went up against their best position and came out firing with a 6-2 first set win. But, we allowed communication and our inconsistencies to hold us back while dropping the third 1-6.

Wheeewwwiii this was a HUGE match for the city tournament. Probably helped seal a podium finish with some gutsy performances tonight on the Eagles courts. Sam Annakin protected his seed winning 6-1, 6-1, but Millman and Pratt now face an uphill battle as they fell against younger guys. McCarthy-Young/Duncan came through in the clutch tonight 6-4, 7-6(2) just streaking to the finish in their tiebreak. You guys will appreciate what that means for the city draw as well.

James Duncan saw his PT come at #2s where we needed him. He fell 4-6 in a first set, but ran his guy just enough that he came up limp on a point and could not keep playing. The INT (RET) got our only point of the night. Really thought Dietrick stepped up to play in a tight spot, but we couldn’t get the #1d pair across the finish line as they fell 6-7(2) in a third set tiebreak. It was a #1d court with three seniors on it, and our senior and sophomore let that one get away.

A really hard fought 2nd place finish this year. Tough to come by in the 2020 season and these guys did it. We had #2s and #2d in the finals, but that was a barn burner on the finish. Really came down to points, but Grant Millman might be the hero securing us the runner-up with a win against the regular #1s player from Covenant as he had three different casts on four limbs.

We sure do love 3-2 wins! Better than the alternative. Sam Annakin had a de facto #2s win 6-1, 6-1. The doubles got better through the match and played their way into the evening winning both doubles courts. Way to go guys, a nice final regular season win against a good Rebel team.

We drew #14 state ranked Cathedral. After facing them in a dual match, just facing them in city, and now to be sent packing in sectional…it’s always a tough draw. As a coach, I like to see some new blood on court and face off against the Panthers, who we don’t know as well and they don’t know us. Cathedral’s singles guys are all gone next year, but so are ours. They took us 1-6, 0-6 in each of the three. Three out of four doubles players were also seniors! Our guys hung around and played well, but it just was too much age and experience to overcome.
What a season. Man, this entire experience was marked by COVID, new protocols, weird traveling logistics, parents being barred from close viewing proximities, etc. But, in the end we were so fortunate to run a safe, successful, and enjoyable season for these boys. The young guys are itching to get their chance to play in and I hope they take this feeling right now with them and use it as a motivator to keep playing, keep fighting, and keep getting better.
This may also be an interesting look next year as Cathedral graduates 6/7 varsity players. We know they’ll fill in the ranks, but we are excited about what’s coming up through ours!

Rotation 1:
Singles went 2-1. Zach Lewis played 1s first rotation and pulled out to a 6-0, 1-0 lead after 30 minutes with no warm up (Mr. Annakin, don’t get any ideas). Grant Millman stretched his 2s lead to 5-2 at the buzzer after hitting the ball deep and attacking short balls. Ethan Pratt was down 3-4 as time was called.
Doubles went 0-2-1 first rotation. Zurawski & Stonner were down 4-5 as time was called. Would really like to see these two be more aggressive with their angles and two-up net play. Annakin & Duncan were tied 4-4, playing well, communication and movement could improve. Dietrick & Konvolinka got their freshman baptism with a pretty one-sided 2-6 deficit at time. Quit hitting long-to-short!

This was against a line up that had 7 seniors and 2 juniors in it, most of which were returning varsity players from last year. To note, we don’t have that experience this year but will build on those underclassmen as they come up through the ranks!

In a heartbreaking defeat, the Trojans fell to Lawrence Central on their home courts 2-3. Victorious was coach Steve Gretencord, who was a pleasure to coach against in a match that was a year in the making. Winning courts for the Trojans were #1s Zach Lewis 6-0, 7-5 and #2d Sam Annakin & James Duncan 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Grant Millman at #2s was the story line tonight. Grant went up 6-3 in the first set, but found the match back at even when his sophomore opponent tied it up 3-6. Grant fought off approximately 15 match points as the match was held in the balance before finally succumbing 5-7 in a third. What a mental test in a high pressure scenario for Grant, one that will drive his character and will to succeed forward!

Zach Lewis has won as many matches at #1s this year as have the past two years of #1s players combined. He’s having a good playing season in the toughest spot for us.

Zach Lewis took down a freshman from the Giants 6-0, 6-0 at 1s. Christner from Ben Davis came to play, but just couldn’t match the consistency of Lewis. Grant Millman debuted at 2s with a 6-0, 6-1 dominant performance while Ethan Pratt made his debut at 3s. Ethan experienced a little bit of nerves in the first set getting down 2-5. He found his footing and limited self-inflicted mistakes to earn a two-hour 7-5, 6-2 win. Jacob Zurawski and Luke Stonner cruised against the Giants at 1d with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Sam Annakin and James Duncan also bested the Giants by the same score, 6-0, 6-1 at 2d.

Against #10 Park Tudor, the Trojans fought valiantly. We simply faced down a top ten team that hit the ball with more pace, more confidence, more direction, and with less errors. #1s Zach Lewis fell 1-6, 0-6 in a well contested match. Zach came to play and made Liebross think about it. #2s Grant Millman had an uphill battle, but fell 1-6, 4-6 in what again a match that made the Panthers prove they could earn it. #3s Ethan Pratt was able to contest his match 1-6, 0-6, as he fell to the more consistent senior Hargett. Sam Annakin/James Duncan at #2d played the closest and longest match of the evening. These two went back and forth with Park Tudor 3-6, 2-6 as strong net play kept them in it. They were able to hold serve, but became too careless with their first serve percentage to take a bite of the Panthers.

Against a Guerin team that saw themselves fall out of the state rankings, they relied on a heavy lineup switch-a-roo to edge out the Trojans 2-3. Zach Lewis pummeled his #1s opponent 6-0, 6-0 (Metzger was playing #1d). #3s James Duncan won an up and down match 7-5, 7-6(4). James was down 0-3 in the first set & got down 1-4 second set, before climbing back to contend for the win. Persistence pays off against a frustrated opponent! Sam Annakin/Jacob Zurawski played the best tennis on any court tonight against the best two players on their roster (the other being Harrington). These two not only hung around, but were holding serve and breaking serve to hold on in a 3-6, 3-6 loss. I hope these guys hold their heads high, because that was high quality tennis against some very strong opponents. #2s Grant Millman found himself as the last court on tonight once again, after playing a 90 minute first set that saw him fall 6-7(2). As the match was in the balance again, Grant worked on good PPR and picked himself up despite falling 3-6 in the second. Gotta keep developing some true grit in this young grasshopper!

Hey, hey, whadda ya say! The Trojans got it done tonight. We foresaw this match was going to take some grittiness out of our guys; they had to show it meant more to go the distance and I think Pike ran out of steam (yay fitness!) . We also introduced PPR (positive physical response) and developed this into our strategy for the night. Pike was fresh off a 3-2 win (straight singles sweep) against LC, who just last week we had lost to 2-3. AND some freshman heard about the 1st game of the second set!
Trojans won 4-1 in a gritty match vs Pike. BCHS went up 1-0 with the first win coming from Stonner/Pratt at #2d. #2s Grant Millman fell to an undefeated senior at #2s, evening the team score up 1-1. The next three matches each took a full third set to go the distance. Zach Lewis was the clinching third point against a heck of a sophomore. James Duncan was the prove it point where we reached four! Trojans went 3 for 3 in the third to take a tough one! #1s Zach Lewis: 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 (make him hit one more!) #3s James Duncan 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 (low risk, low reward tennis got the job done, few self-inflicted wounds!) #1d Zurawski / Annakin (be net dominant) got their act together and showed they were the best two players on the court 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

#1s Zach Lewis played some good tennis tonight, but I think his opponent just played better. He fell 2-6, 4-6. #2s Grant Millman will get through this tough stretch of tennis and be an example on the team for where a little perseverance and a good mental attitude can take your potential — not quite there yet tonight though, falling 4-6, 4-6. #3s James Duncan came up short in his mental test 4-6, 2-6 letting his guy rattle the cage a little too much to dig out. The doubles were the silver lining tonight. We showed good mental fortitude when challenged and took care of business when most needed. #1d Sam Annakin/Jacob Zurawski came out ahead 6-4, 6-4 and found a way to keep strong net play by their opponents from taking them down the wrong path. #2d Luke Stonner/Ethan Pratt found their way 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Can you guess a similar story line to the rest of these guys…when we doubt our confidence we fall behind. When we play true north, we set sail!

Winning courts were #1d Felts & Konvolinka 8-6, #3d Sanders & Pruitt 8-7(5), and Konvolinka & Dietrick 8-2. A good night for our 1 Sr, 1 Jr, 1 Soph, & 6 Frosh vs. 11 Irish seniors.

Tried a little line up switch-a-roo tonight and I think we overpowered our #2d court. We cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win here at #2d with Millman/Stonner, while #2s Pratt fell 3-6, 2-6. Nothing says we would’ve had five points without the switch, but still need to evaluate where our strengths are and see how we move forward. #1s Lewis played a good Ritter opponent (asst. coaches son) and a mini version of himself as noted by @IndyCornrows winning 6-3, 6-1…could’ve had white balls! James Duncan comes out ahead 6-1, 6-4 at #3s and #1d Annakin/Zurawski edge the Raiders 6-0, 6-1.

Southport is always a very athletic and scrappy team. Add fast to that list fast and you have the 2019 Cardinals. Zach Lewis took care of business at #1s 6-2, 6-0 in about the only lopsided match of the day. #2s Ethan Pratt fell 7-5, 2-6, 5-10 in an up and down match that saw the Trojans give away 5 points for every 1 point the Cardinals had to win. James Duncan fell 4-6, 6-2, 5-10 and our opponent didn’t come off too tired because we hit lots of balls right to the guy. Doubles were key here, where we have a beefed up doubles lineup with #1d Zurawski/Annakin winning 6-4, 6-2 and taking charge at the net. #2d Stonner/Millman 6-3, 6-4 won in a very close match that was ultimately the last point to fall Bishop Chatard’s way. Would still like to see these guys aggression and angles improve.

These guys are really pretty good. #1s Zach Lewis matched his guy best he could making him run down every extra ball plus one more. His THN opponent was better from the baseline and that’s where we just couldn’t run him out of his comfort zone. #2s Ethan Pratt took one on the nose to THN’s best position on their lineup 0-6, 1-6. Really hoping Pratt can get his improve his serve percentage and minimize freebies, that was the story today on the #2s court. William Dietrick stepped in at #3s for his first varsity match and couldn’t be more proud of this kid. The THN guy was a bigger/stronger/faster player with harder groundstrokes and a heck of an approach game, but William hung in there. He just kept making his guy miss. He eventually fell 2-6, 6-2, 1-6 but what a great experience for this freshman playing the best opponent he has faced this season and drawing him to a three setter. Doubles has improved their net game and hopefully understand how dominant net play wins the day. #1d Annakin/Zurawski fell 3-6, 2-6 against a heck of a serving pair coupled with strong net games. #2d Stonner/Millman fell 3-6, 3-6 but again, saw their net game improve. We just couldn’t close out the shots we needed to and let THN hang around. Ultimately we would make a mistake or THN found a way to close the net before us. Finish forward gentleman and find an angle! We did make a stop at Marvins on DePauw’s campus afterward. They open at 5pm, so if we keep going late in the day, this could be a fun little tradition!

It wasn’t an easy 4-1, and at #1d had the darnest thing going, we likely fall to a #2 seed with that loss. Our execution in tiebreaks and third sets are not where they need to be considering how much we practice them.

The Road Warriors (they played all 22 matches away this year as this should have been their match but due to miscue, we were rescheduled to BR Park) came out firing. Zach Lewis recorded the only win swiftly at #1s, but the rest fell handedly. They lose only three seniors (#3s) & (#2d) which means this isn’t getting any easier next season.

Things got a little dicey at #2s when we called a 10pt tiebreak due to daylight at #2s. Pratt did edge out a 10-8 3rd set tiebreak, but across the board our mental fortitude needs to be upgraded and fine-tuned. Patrick Felts made a varsity appearance getting a 6-1 6-0 win alongside partner James Duncan.

Good team, probably a top 10 team, but their guys are under-performing in big matches which has them in top 15. Did not see evidence of that up-and-down tonight. We won only two games across our three singles courts. Things went a little better for doubles as we hung in there, but can’t say we quite ruffled any of the Braves’ feathers. Things got a little chippy at #1d per our opponents, but, we kept our cool for the most part. Nice touch of them to include our seniors on their senior night, will try to replicate coming up here!

We played preventative defense on court and tried not to lose rather than playing the aggressive offense that got us in a winning position in the first place! This is definitely a mental mindset shift we must make if we expect to perform at our best the remaining matches of the season. With two very even dual matches, that has to iron itself out. Looking forward to Wednesdays’ practice! Also, they had six seniors and one freshman on Varsity. Kinda eerily similar to us last year, but worse in terms of replacement. We clip the Tigers next year and sure won’t miss their top-heavy experience in the lineup!

Wheeewwwi! This was a class BCHS vs. HCHS match. A 3-2 win for the Trojans that came down to us being just a few strokes better. Grant Millman earned the clinching point, 6-3, 7-6(9) at #2s. He netted his best win of the year against the best person he has beaten. Go home smiling, Grant! We fell victim to our minds again though, and found a way to let four leads slip away from us on three courts. We have to and will get better in that regard, because we can’t let 3-0 (#1d–2nd set), 4-1 (#2s–2nd set), 4-2 (#3s–2nd set), and 6-3 tiebreak leads (#2s–2nd set) end up with us fighting for our lives. Be the HONEY BADGER! Booker graduates from #1s so move everyone up one, but same goes for us. Their doubles will remain a little thorn in our side next year as the three juniors match our three juniors. We took the advantage tonight, but were tested in the process.

Our depth was okay, as we took #3s and #2d, but they were top heavy (and this was a weak New Pal team). This was definitely our best chance to knock them off in awhile and maybe for awhile.

Always a big day in BCHS tennis when a victory drops out against Roncalli. This was a plain cut 4-1 W. Roncalli had ZERO seniors though, so this match only gets harder from this year on (next year 4 possible senior varsity experienced players). The schedule this year has been crazy, this was an atypically warm match (not comparable to south side bubble vs. girls in Spring 2019). Here we were in the first day of October. Whew!

And that’s all she wrote. We drew the Panthers (at the time #7 or #8 ranked) for 1st round of sectional. Would have preferred Cathedral because I think our #1d team had a chance to advance, but that’s the way it goes. This team went onto be STATE RUNNER-UPS, knocking off #2 Hometead @ HHS, and several other program wins 3-2, before falling to Carmel 3-2 (an equally impressive feat).

Sam Annakin takes home a three set victory at #3s 4-6, 6-4, 10-5, while the #2d combination of Jack Calvert (12) & Elias McQueary (12) fall in three 1-6, 6-4, 3-6. Adam Pemberton (12) competed exceptionally well against the Panthers #2s, but fell 0-6, 2-6. Many good tidings to come!

In the end, this match needed the Trojans to show up with a lot more tenacity on and off court. #1s Adam Pemberton (12) went up 6-1 in the first set before losing steam and fell 6-7(5), 5-7 in the final two sets. Zach Lewis, took the opposite approach after losing the first set, but came out to a 7-6(6) win in the second. Zach found himself down 1-6, fought back, but ultimately came up short 8-10 in a third set tiebreak. Sam Annakin (10) at #3s had a rocky first set, but won 6-3. However, the sophomore only won 2 of his next 12 games falling 0-6, 2-6 in the final two sets. Jack Phelps (12) & Ben Annakin (12) dropped lots and lots of unforced errors, losing 1-6, 2-6 in straight sets. Jack Calvert (12) & Elias McQueary (12) had three set points in the first set before they lost in a tiebreak 6-7 (7). The two quickly lost momentum and fell 2-6 in the second set. Not a great night for the Trojans, but one they will certainly learn from.

Close matches all around against a beefed up Pike Red Devils lineup. #1s singles Adam Pemberton (12) won the first set 6-3, before he saw a freshman ruffle his feathers in the second set. After going up 5-0, Adam had to serve at 5-4. He put three big first serves in a row in going up 40-0 and closed it out 6-4. #2s Sam Annakin (10) played the Pike former #1s and fell in the first set 4-6. Sam turned things around 6-4 in the second, before prevailing 10-8 in the third. #1d Jack Phelps (12) & Jack Calvert (12) took home a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win against a Pike team that pushed the duo to their limits all the way to the end. #2d Jacob Zurawski (11) & Ben Annakin (12) played a very error-prone first set, despite winning 7-5. They got their act together in the second and punished the Red Devils 6-1. The fight song was sung on the bus for the first time this year as the Trojans netted their first road win!

For the third time in program history (1995, 2006, 2018), the Trojans knock off the Lawrence North Wildcats! Celebrating a huge team victory, Jack Calvert (12) & Sam Annakin (10) white-balled their #2d opponents 6-3, 6-0. The second point off court was #1d duo of Jack Phelps (12) & Ben Annakin (12). After dropping the first set, they took it home in three, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. #3s Elias McQueary (12) sealed the victory against LN. Despite losing his first set as well, Elias captured the win by a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 margin! Way to go Trojans!

Zach Lewis (11) moves to #1s, while Sam Annakin (10) takes on #2s and both pick up the win 6-0 6-0. Grant Millman (10) stepped in at #3s, but after going up 6-3, 3-0, a heavy drizzle hit forcing an early decision. Jack Phelps (12) & Ben Annakin (12) win at #1d, while Ethan Pratt (10) & Jacob Zurawski (11) win at #2d. The drive down was f-l-o-o-d-e-d! I still can’t believe we got this match in. Pretty sure we were the only Indy school to get a tennis match in on this evening.

Avenging a 2017 2-3 loss, the Trojans come out on top with a 3-2 win against the Warriors. Covenant Christian entered the match 10-1 on the season. Jack Calvert (12) & Elias McQueary (12) won the first point of the night for the Trojans at #2d 6-3, 6-1. Quickly following was #2s Zach Lewis (11), who put forth a top notch effort to win 6-3, 6-2. The kid can play! Jack Phelps (12) & Ben Annakin (12) were the third and clinching point for the Trojans 6-4, 6-2. Despite having two match points in the second set, Sam Annakin (10) was defeated 6-1, 6-7(7), 5-7 in a 3hr 5 minute match.

On Senior Night for the Class of 2019, the Trojans picked up a decisive 5-0 victory. The Trojans only lost seven games across all five courts.

The lone win for the Trojans was Zach Lewis at #2s with a score of 7-6(3), 6-2. Unfortunately, the Braves straight up lineup is dominant (#10 in State), and will be even better next season (#5 or under in state) as they will have 5+ GOOD seniors.

What a massive team effort to capture this 3-2 win! In what was the latest night of my tenure, the Trojans prevailed with wins from Zach Lewis at #2s 6-2, 6-1, #3s Sam Annakin [the clinching took-three-sets point!] 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, and #2d Calvert and McQueary 7-5, 7-6(3). #1d Phelps and B. Annakin fell 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 while #1s Pemberton fell 1-6, 2-6. The depth of this Trojans squad provided a big 3-2 win against a Lebanon squad who is tough to beat on their home courts.

This match was against a New Pal team who beat Mt. Vernon 3-2 just the night before (BCHS vs. Mt. Vernon was a 0-5 loss). #3s Sam Annakin hit a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win. Jack Calvert & Elias McQueary scored a 6-1, 6-3 rout at #2d. This brought the score to 2-2 and it came down to the #1d court. #1d Jack Phelps & Ben Annakin had a 6-0, 4-1 lead and let it collapse away losing 11 of the last 12 games. Bummer.

My oh my! Trojans win, Trojans win! The most thrilling win of the ages for the Trojans, 3-2 over the Rebels! What a night to see this group of players come together and play heart and soul for each other inside a humid UIndy Bubble (of whom we were greeted with very kind & warm hospitality). 1D B.Annakin/J.Phelps claim the swing point 6-2, 6-7(3), 7-6(3). This group combined a 10 win season – the first since 2012!

And just like that, the Trojan season comes to an end. An 0-5 loss to #3 North Central Panthers saw the boys combine to win a set (six total games across five courts). What a day and what a season. It all officially ends at 10-7, the most wins by a BCHS boys team since 2013.
