2022 Girls Tennis Scorecard

    • 4/6/22
      Lebanon
      W 3-2.

In a rare break between rain and sleet, the Trojans picked up their first win of the season in their home opener. It poured rain all day up until ~3:30pm. Then, suddenly the skies cleared, wind blew just enough, and the sun opened up to the heavens in Broad Ripple Village. We somehow started at 5pm, thanks to some wonderful parents who know their way around a squeegee. #2s Maggie Bertram (9) picked up her first career win 7-5, 6-0, as did #3s Eileen Forsee (9). Last court on, with the team score tied a 2-2, #2d Elena Mazzei (12) & Mary Kauffman (10) earned the third point and secured a team victory with a 7-6(5), 7-5 win.

    • 4/12/22
      Pike
      W 4-1.

The Trojans avenged a 2-3 loss from last season against a nice Pike Red Devils team. The only loss came against Pike’s wonderful #1s player, Nyah Mathis. Eileen Forsee was the first point off court for the Trojans as she picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Eileen is still yet to lose a game in her high school career…what a start from the Freshman! #1d and #2d were quick to follow, with Monica Szentes (12) & Elena Mazzei (12) earning a 6-2, 6-2 win while Zizi Wuensch (12) and Mary Kauffman (10) ran away with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Last court on was Maggie Bertram (9) who dug deep and found her way to a 7-5 first set lead. Maggie fell behind 2-5 in the second set before rebounding with 4 straight games to bring it back to 6-5. Cassandra evened it up at 6-6 at which a back and forth tiebreak ensued. Maggie found a way and the Trojan freshman came out victorious 7-3. Way to go Maggie!

    • 4/19/22
      Mt. Vernon
      L 0-5.

Tough conditions against #30 ranked team. Very windy, girls adjusted well. Paberzs (12) and Wuensch (12) put on a great battle at #1d, but just couldn’t string enough little big points together falling 6-7(2), 5-7.

    • 4/21/22
      Cathedral
      L 0-5.

Tough outing against #17 cathedral. Their doubles were bolstered by a new freshman that added an extra dimension to an already strong lineup. Our singles girls fought exceptionally well against a heavy hitting 1-2-3 lineup. Sara Wojtalik is playing #3s and can hit a 95mph first serve if that gives you some perspective. Although, I am so proud of how Eileen Forsee (9) stood up against that pace. Our freshman Eileen legitimately had her rattled and frustrated at times, blocking balls back and making her opponent do a lot of work before missing frequently enough to drop several games. It’s been a long time since we could say that about a #3s BCHS player vs. the irish. This has historically been their strength, putting out the best three players they have at 1-2-3 and letting the rest of the state see if they can hang!

      Lawrence North
      L 0-5.

Another windy night for the Trojans against the #27 Wildcats, this time a heavy cross court wind that shifted at set break. Their facility is beautiful, wonderfully poured post-tension stress courts are becoming a thing of beauty. Although the concrete grit still has the purists a little rattled. Pretty dominant showing against our singles, but we are showing tremendous signs of growth and maturity from our freshman Maggie Bertram (9). She was just outgunned tonight by a top player in state. We are asking her to do a lot as a freshman at #1s (We think it’s only happened two other times in BCHS girls tennis history), but she’s learning how to compete against the best players a little more each day and this valuable experience will guide her through the rest of her career.

Well, we started. All our girls were about 8-10 games into their match when the rain just kept falling and rendered us unplayable.

    • 4/30/22
      Delta Invitational
      Place 3rd.

Trojans went a huge 2-1 on the day. First round against Muncie Burris saw a 3-2 win lift the Trojans spirits (and play for a top 4 position at Delta all day).
Second round Trojans squared off against #22 ranked Delta. On their home courts in their home invitational with a new indoor facility, we didn’t match up well against their lineup. Delta played very smart doubles. Forsee (9) and Bertram (9) gave it their all, went out hard, and played no strings attached in a new position in the lineup. We were truncated by 4 rain delays over the course of the day. Three of them came in this round, the longest spanning a 45 minute drying wait time. Tough to overcome that adversity, but the girls stayed in control of what they could and competed as well as this coach could ask for.
Third round was a thriller against FW Carroll and coaching standout Kyle Stoffel. We had a great time catching up as I played against his teams growing up, but now had the honor of coaching with him. Trojans won 3-2 as it came down to 2-2 at #2d and our girls Mazzei (12) and Kauffman (10) dropped an 0-6 first set before rallying their minds and won 6-0, 10-2. Way to go Trojans.
Zizi Wuensch (12) came home with the Delta Invitational Sportsmanship award, the greatest achievement of our entire day. Way to represent us proud Zizi!

      L 2-3.

The opening match of the year saw the Trojans fall 2-3 in a late night rain delayed match at Lebanon. The good news, the girls learned how to squeegee correctly! We also made the annual stop at Milky Way to celebrate what a great group of gals we have! Nadia Stuart (12) had a tall order against an experienced fellow senior, ultimately falling 0-6, 3-6 in her first varsity match and first match at #1s! Gabby Croddy (12) fought off cramps, but couldn’t get over the hump at 2-6, 5-7 in a match where she hit 10 balls a point. Monica Szentes (11) fought in a strong opening set 3-6, but lost her steam dropping the second set 0-6.
The two wins for the Lady Trojans came at #1d with Shelby Paberzs (11) & Zizi Wuensch (11) digging deep to find themselves in a third set win 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Way to put the pedal to the metal and regroup after the second set, coach is proud! At #2d Peyton Bean (11) & Merritt Jaeger (12) took at commanding 6-2 opening set, and made it a little tense on themselves second set before closing out a 7-5 decision.

      L 2-3.

Ooohh what aa night, duh dah, duh duh dah dah dah dah! Pike ladies came to play and they put out a strong 1-2-3 singles lineup. Junior Aaralyn Mills was in at #1s and brought her finest game against Nadia Stuart (12). Nadia grinded out a competitive look tonight, but just got outlasted from the baseline 1-6, 0-6. Freshman Nyah Mathis was in at #2s knocked off Gabby Croddy (12) who ran all over the court and them some tonight playing her heart out. Gabby had to retire from cramps at 0-6, 1-2 in the match. Hopefully we get fitness at full speed this season and move beyond any physical ailments! #3s Monica Szentes (11) got off to a 4-3 lead in the first working on topspin and following through, but lost the next 9 games in a 4-6, 0-6 decision.
Shelby Paberzs (11) and Zizi Wuensch (11) had their second three set marathon in just as many matches. The two worked on high service percentage, dominant net play, and despite a minor hiccup in the second, the two cruised to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 dub! #2d Peyton Bean (11) and Merritt Jaeger (12) took home the only decisive win for the Lady Trojans tonight with a 6-0, 6-4 win. Good net play and good communication will see them grow through the season.

      L 0-5.

Gabby Croddy (12) stepped in at #1s to face off against a tough sophomore. Girl played her heart out, but just couldn’t find the weapons to close points off against a sophomore. Elena Mazzei (12) saw trial by fire in her return to the lineup at #2s. Elena hung around, but the ten day quarantine didn’t help as she dropped a 1-6, 2-6 decision. Avery Bruce (10) got her first shot at a varsity match in a season of firsts!
Shelby Paberzs (11) and Zizi Wuensch (11) played against a very beatable Braves #1d team. We did not take advantage of Brebeuf’s strength only in singles, and fell 2-6, 2-6. We did happen to hit our partner in the head with our serve. Good thing we can’t hit that hard or concussion protocol would be the next step to our girls losing even more PT!

      Oldenburg Academy
      L 0-5.

This one sure looked different from our last time facing off. We made it out to Shelbyville again on a Friday night, not Frankie’s favorite night of the week to hit the road to travel far an away match. Maybe the Twisters come to our house next year, whadda ya say coach? #1s of Nadia Stuart (12) sure didn’t represent the score. These girls were three games into their match 45 minutes downhill into the evening. Some long gassing points, lots of dueces, but they did not fall our way dropping a 1-6, 0-6 decision. Gabby Croddy played through cramps, fatigue, blood-sweat-tears, you name it and was the last match off court at #2s ~7:45pm. Dang girl! 4-6, 6-2, 4-10. Long way to ten, but we fell down early and fast in that third set breaker. Mazzei just needed to commit to the four life and get more balls consistently in play. She’ll get there, just needs to believe in herself.
Doubles were on the other side. Shelby Paberzs (11) and Zizi Wuensch (11) are getting more aggressive at the net and growing into their serves, but their opponents proved just a little more consistent at the aggressive net game winners and took home the crown. Peyton Bean (11) and Lilli Mohler (11) rounded out the line up at #2d. Lilli was baptized in her first varsity match ever, and just needs to use those volleys she had in the first two weeks of season to her advantage. Use your height and agility to cross over your opponents and find an angle with those volleys!

      L 2-3.

They put their best three out at singles and swiftly took care of our three singles players. A heck of a freshman in at #1s for the Eagles. Nadia Stuart (12) did what she could and rose to the occasion as she played the best she has all season. She absolutely made her girl work for it, but about all we could do was play really good defense in a 0-6, 1-6 loss….she will be fun to play against three more years! A second freshman in at #2s, who faced off against Gabby Croddy (12) will be just as fun. Heritage finally had a senior in at #3s, but she took care of Monica Szentes (11) 3-6, 2-6. We need to get Monica across the finish line in a second set.
Shelby Paberzs (11) and Zizi Wuensch (11) took care of business at #1d 6-4, 6-2. These two took the lead out on their serves and net play. Did lots of long to shorts. But, not enough to sway the final W-L column, only their coaches stress column. It will be interesting to see the result of this match if we see them again in City. My money is on our girls, but we won’t be as comfortable doing it next time! Merritt Jaeger (12) and Peyton Bean (11) won in a last match on third set thriller for our second point, but the match was already decided. These two fought down from a 6-7(5) first set deficit, to rally back and pull ahead with a 6-3 and 6-4 win.

#19 Irish swept the Lady Trojans. Gabby Croddy (12) was the only singles player to earn a game across all three courts. Cathedral has a knack for throwing out three phenomenal singles players! #1d Shelby Paberzs (11) / Zizi Wuensch (11) had the closest showing of the night falling 3-6, 2-6. We could see them again in sectional, in three weeks. What are we going to do to get better between now and then? Time will only tell.

Same story, different team. Another stud freshman in for the Wildcats, Issy May! Coach Brad says she’s the best player in LN girls history. She puts LN on the map at #27. Her serve is just beautiful, something all our players need to learn from. No Nadia for her to go up against, instead Gabby Croddy (12) stepped up and took the helm for us. Hands down the strongest player Gabby has seen all year. Avery Laux (10) saw her first varsity match tonight. We all gained valuable experience against a good team.

A tangible victory tonight. We have had different goals for this team all season. This match came at the right time. Six weeks into season and the girls get to celebrate the first team victory. United behind a cause we are, we get better and improve daily.

‘Small steps may appear unimpressive, but don’t be deceived. They are the means by which perspectives are subtly altered, mountains are gradually scaled, and lives are drastically changed.”

Warren Central only had five players present at tonights’ match. We are fortunate to have a program leading 22 girls towards our ultimate goals: to find joy in shared experiences, to treat each other with respect, to learn from each other and be better people because of our joint perspectives.

The story of Somebody, Everybody, Nobody, and Anybody came out tonight.

Well, remember how I said COVID has upended us this year? Yeah, that was a harbinger. Little did I know just a week ago that we’d be down two varsity seniors. Also, remember how everyone has a good freshman this year? Franklin was no exception. Gabby Croddy (12) is working on developing weapons, we just need more ways to win points. Her consistency and scrappiness go far, but against heavy hitters, it only goes so far. Shelby Paberzs (11) had to step in at #2s and she was the only singles player to earn a game, falling 0-6, 1-6. Avery Laux (10) and Elena Mazzei (11) played as hard as they could together at #2d for the first time this season. Setting a more dominant tone with net play and higher first serve percentages will get these ladies to the promise land. For now, we celebrate the small joys in life, like winning the first game of the second set!

The huge plus is that we are all playing higher up in the lineup that we could imagine, and with that we gain experience and undergo nerve washing. We are getting all these firsts out of our system so we know how to approach them when we face similar situations again.

United in our pursuit, the ladies enjoy their second winning team effort of the season! It is fun to see the joy in their faces coming off court with wins. This whole time, we’ve emphasized that it’s not the end score that matters. It’s wanting to win that is important, not the act of winning. Wanting to win means they are showing up, putting in the practice, elevating their teammates, practicing to the point of fatigue, and having the confidence to step up when your team calls on you. I ask them every time to walk me through the match and tell me how they did. It’s so nice to not have to even ask scores anymore—they know to not focus on scores instead to focus on what went well and what we wish went better. It’s nice when the cards fall their way and they get to enjoy the fruit of their labor, especially when you’re down two varsity seniors!

We get one day better by playing some of the best competition. Although the Braves are not a state ranked team, I suspect later in the year they’ll make a splash outside the top 25. That means their JV isn’t far behind. What will our girls do in the off-season to close the gap?

So, the big question again looms, what will our girls do to elevate their team in the next 364 days (please come to Broad Ripple Park) to close that gap?
Monica Szentes (11) took an 8-0 win at #1s. Leah Brown (11) took home an 8-2 win at #2s. Avery Laux (10) 8-1 at #3s and she’s really showing some fantastic promise in at the singles lineup. Go JV! We are going to need your strength in the coming years because their two freshman aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Elena Mazzei (11) stepped in at #1s and walked away with a 4-1, 4-1 decisive claim to her throne. Avery Laux (10) and Leah Brown (11) stepped in at #1d and dug their way back from a 2-4 first set loss to take a tight 4-3(2) second set tiebreak. The two got hot early and stayed there, earning a 10-2 third set tiebreak win. What a fun match to see them grow during! Avery Bruce (10) and Maria Agostino (10) improved their way throughout their match. The first set, the doubles duo saw an 0-4 first set slip away quickly, but rallied back to a 3-3 second set requiring a tiebreak. Their opponents were the ones to go ugly early and popped off a really strong start to the tiebreak. Unfortunately for us, they never looked back dropping our Lady Trojans 1-7 in the breaker.

Pretty tough match up against our three sophomores and two juniors. Elena Mazzei (11) and Avery Laux (10) played in at 1s & 2s respectively, putting up 3-5 first sets. Sydney Sorensen was the last point on court at #2s, and while she dug deep into her bag of tricks clawing her way back from a 1-5 first set deficit to 3-5, it was too much to fight off a formidable opponent, and she fell 3-6, 2-6.

I want her to carry this intensity through the rest of her matches. Just the way she held a stoic game face all night, the way the ball echoed off the sides of the bubble, it was a fun sight to see. Winning is sometimes more fun, but playing your best tennis is more important. I think she did tonight. Would like to see this carry though tomorrow vs Oldenburg in what will likely be the deciding court.
Sydney Sorensen was run left-right-up-and-back and upside down tonight in a 3-6, 0-6 match. Would really like to see her match day groundies add 25 mph. She can hit with the best of them, coaches believe in her! Sarah Scheidler stepped in at #3s and played a very very consistent opponent who took the edge 3-6, 1-6.
Yay doubles! deCastro & Williams white balled their girls (holy cow I didn’t even realize it!) Park & Barnes saw a tough fought 6-4, 6-4 win fall their way. These four ladies just need to commit to aggressive net play and exact their will against their opponents. We got the skills (save the ability to go short-to-short, long-to-long consistently!), but that’s why we play. We get better, learn, and gain traction that eventually results in habit.

Tough Friday night match rounding out a four-match week. These take their toll on the girls and duly noted for next season, have to schedule more matches in the beginning. The two winning courts for Lady Blue were #2s Sydney Sorensen and #3s Addi Laux. We are looking forward to getting back on the courts next week and apply our lessons we’ve learned this week!

Another oh so close competition! Man, we just can’t find that third point in these matches. I know these Lady Trojans have it in them, they will be back with intensity and ready to persevere. It’s been such a weird stretch though, sometimes we win all the singles and lose both doubles, then there’s nights like tonight where we sweep the doubles but can’t get a singles point to drop. My oh my this Lady Trojans team tried! Winning points were deCastro & Williams at #1d 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 as well as Park & Barnes won 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

      Sectional vs Cathedral
      L 0-5.

The 2019 season has come to an end. Could not have asked for a better group of girls to compete alongside each other this season. A special moment came at the end of the bus ride when I think I might have heard the fight song start up a second time. The seniors all stayed in the parking lot blaring music dancing with each other–may they forever have forged the bond of teammates.

Alysa Guffey at 1s exited 0-6, 0-6 and finished her career with 59 wins total wins, enough for second in program history.
Sydney Sorensen at 2s exited 0-6, 2-6 doing her best to make a formidable Cathedral opponent fight for each point.
Addi Laux at 3s exited 0-6, 0-6 in a match that will help her see her game go through some growth in the 10 months.
Claire Williams and Belle deCastro exited at 1d 0-6, 1-6, winning the first game of the second set. Claire, can’t say you didn’t go out on top!
Katie Barnes & Lucy Park at 2d exited 3-6, 4-6, making the Irish work once again for their point. Ladies – congrats on a great career!
To all our players, it’s been an honor to be a part of your journey. Use your successes to motivate you forward and your losses to elevate you into a better player and most importantly, person. Who’s next? Who will round out next years lineup and continue to make Lady Trojan Tennis a program to reckon with?

Nadia Stuart and Peyton Bean won at #3d 4-2, 2-4, 10-8. These two were down 6-8 in the third set tiebreak and strung off four points in a row to win the match and yield a tie for the team!
Katie Guymon faced two very strong Lady Irish players at #1s & #2s, but gained some traction in through her second match before falling 3-5 in the final set. Gabby Croddy faced a similar tough foe at #3s. Despite her best efforts to outlast and outrun her opponent, she fell 2-4, 3-5.

What a year it has been for JV! In this round, Nadia Stuart stepped in at #1s and delivered a punishing 4-1, 4-2 win. Maddi Felts in at #2s blistered her opponent in a 4-0, 4-2 win. Sarah Scheidler & Katie Guymon definitely gave coach his first gray hairs as this duo went out with an 0-4 first set loss. They then summoned their experience and took the second set 4-2. Brad Gilbert wrote an entire book called, ‘Winning Ugly.’ I think this duo took out a full page ad and won their third set 5-3. Caroline Machala & Heidi Copple were persistent in their pursuit of a W tonight, spinning an unbelievable momentum switch 4-5(8) first set loss into a 4-1, 4-1 three set win. Gabby Croddy & Peyton Bean at #3d won their 5-4(1), 4-1. Sounds like a good week for some additional tiebreak practice!

This group is bolstering up some strong competition for the future lineup. Our coaches hope this nice group of players recognizes the important role that they play in the future of the Lady Trojan tennis program. Their willingness to follow in our seniors’ shoes and dedicate themselves to being the next face of the program will determine our fate. It became clear tonight that they will have some big shoes to face and whole ‘nother level to play to next year. What will the offseason hold?

Winning was #2s Heidi Copple, #1d Nadia Stuart & Katie Guymon, #2d Maddi Felts & Gabby Croddy, & #3d Zizi Wuensch & Peyton Bean. The most exciting part of the night came watching these freshman play at #3d. What coachable gals and more exciting to think, will a future #1s player come from one these two?

      Guerin Catholic
      L 1-4

Our only win was at 5 doubles by Lele and Sylvie. This was Guerin’s 6th match of the season and only our first. Guerin had 24 girls and no singles players. Therefore, our two singles players ended up playing doubles together in the number 2 spot. Two good singles players do not necessarily make a good doubles team (which I knew…) Lineup: Sarah S & Mel J (1-8) (6-3), Merritt & Monica (0-8), (1-5), Elena & Leah ((2-8),(6-1), Lilli & Sarah G (0-8), (4-6), Lele & Sylvie (8-5), (6-1). Things to work on for everyone: Court awareness (getting balls from other courts), returning harder serves, staying out of no man’s land and being in position, looking forward when up at the net, remembering basics at net (squeeze and freeze, not swinging), knowing the score at all times and calling for help when needed, giving praise to the other team ‘good serve, nice shot’, being more active on the court, talking to your partner. Guerin’s 1-3 doubles were very tough, hard serves, and consistent.

      Park Tudor
      W 3-2

The girls pulled off a great victory against Park Tudor (away) on Monday, April 29th with a 3-2 score. Our losses came at #1 and #2 singles against very tough competitors. Merritt Jaeger played 1S and lost 3-8. The score was not reflective of how evenly the match was played. Lots of great rallies. Serves were where many points were won or lost. Monica Szentes lost 0-8. She too struggled with her serves and mentally got down on herself. The PT player was very consistent, used lots of topspin, and was a strong server. Mel Jansen & Sarah Starliper (1D) won 8-5. Both girls were aggressive and served well. Elena Mazzei & Leah Brown played smart tennis to win 8-4. They played to the opponents’ weaknesses. At 3D, Sarah Gramling & Elly Spalding won 8-5. Great chemistry b/t our players and Elly served well. Lely Nguyen & Sylvie Kramer remain undefeated and easily won 6-1. Lele also played singles and won 6-0. As a team, we need to work on: having two balls when serving, never giving up on a point until it’s finished, more talking between players, (back playing saying Switch).

      L 3-4

The girls played a hard fought match against a very strong and competitive NC team. BCHS lost 3-4 but Coach was very proud of how well everyone played! This was also the first time we played the best 2 out of three 3 sets with 10 point tiebreaker for 3rd. We lost 1-3 singles to experienced players. Merritt Jaeger at #1 singles lost 0-6, 0-6. Her opponent hit consistently hard topspin shots and placed them all over the court. She was a super player. Merritt’s serves held her back but she stayed in the rallies. Elly Spalding played #2S and lost 3-6, 2-6. This was Elly’s first singles match of the season. Elly moved well on the court but her opponent was simply a better player that day. Monica Szentes, 3S, lost 0-6, 1-6 to an opponent who’s first serve was Varsity level. The NC player had lots of topspin and was very experienced. Lele Nguyen, 4S, won 7-5, 6-3. One doubles with Mel Jansen & Sarah Starliper was a very exciting match and showed how mental the game of tennis is for players. Scores were 3-6, 6-4, 12-10 TB. The girls dug deep and got fired up to win the second set and their confidence helped pull out the W. Elena Mazzei & Leah Brown struggled at 2D to overcome the mental hurdles and lost 2-6, 3-6. Sarah Gramling & Sylvie Kramer won at 3D 6-1, 9-7. They had a lot of fun playing together. Overall we need to work on returning harder serves, hitting through the ball for more consistency, and staying tough mentally.

Oh, how I wish we would’ve had an additional matchup so that we could’ve had a win over Cathedral! Instead, it was a 3-3 draw with the Irish sweeping Singles and the Trojans winning doubles. Lele Nyugen hesitantly played 3S and lost 4-8. I was impressed with her tenacity because she was down 0-4 and could’ve easily given up. Many games went to deuce over and over. For someone who did not want to play singles on that day, she really hung in there. At 2 singles Elly Spalding lost 1-8 to a seasoned player who hit with power and consistency. Merritt Jaeger lost at 1 Singles, 3-8, against a player who had her own cheering section. Sometimes that is hard to overcome. We need to continue working on being mentally tough and getting in shape to outlast our opponents. Sarah Starliper and Mel Jansen had a decisive win at 1 Doubles (8-2) with tough serves and aggressive net play. Leah Brown and Elena Mazzei did a nice job talking to one another as partners and calling the ball during this 2 Doubles match to overpower their opponents (8-2). Sarah Gramling and Sylvie Kramer played 3 doubles against a Cathedral trio, who rotated players every game, and won 8-4.

Be gracious in winning as well as losing. Great lesson to carry with us no matter what we’re doing. 2. A few doubles’ teams were distracted by coaches/parents/players yelling and cheering and let that interfere with their play. We need to channel our inner Elsa and ‘Let it Go’. 3. We had an adaptive singles tennis match where the player in the wheelchair gets two bounces. What an inspiration!

All 5 reserve teams won their matches after patiently waiting to take the courts. Monica played 3 Singles to win 6-3 at 9:20 p.m. Sarah & Mel were 3D and came back to win 8-5. Merritt and Elly loved playing doubles (4) together and dominated their court for an 8-2 win. At 5D, Leah & Elena once again had great teamwork to win 8-3. Sylvie and Lele rounded out our sweep by winning 8-2. Team bonding on the hour-long bus ride was awesome to witness. What a fantastic group of girls!
