In our boys’ inaugural swim meet, our team showcased commendable performances against tough competition. Chatard secured a victory against Speedway and narrowly missed out on triumph against Decatur Central.
The highlights of the meet were a testament to our team’s talent and dedication:
Alex Pax exhibited remarkable speed, clocking an impressive 23.59 in the 50 free and replicated his excellence with another 23-second performance in the 200 relay.
Donovan McMahon made history by shattering the school’s 6-dive record, achieving a remarkable score of 248.85.
Sebastian Bourgeois demonstrated his potential by clinching second place in the 100 breaststroke in his debut meet, a promising start to his swimming journey.
Kellen Ford displayed his prowess by securing first place in the fiercely contested 100 free event, showcasing his skill and determination.
Max Bourgeois, a seasoned Senior, showcased his experience and talent by clinching victories in both the 200 and 500 free events, demonstrating his consistent dominance in distance swimming.
The boys’ 200 free relay team put up an excellent performance, securing a well-deserved second-place finish, adding to the team’s overall success.

Bishop Chatard Dominates 2023 City Tourney with Record-breaking Performances
In a remarkable showcase of aquatic prowess, Bishop Chatard High School’s swim team left an indelible mark at the 2023 City Tournament, clinching victories in both the boys’ and girls’ categories. The standout performance of the day belonged to the phenomenal Jack Steadham, who shattered not just city records but also school records in an impressive display of skill and determination.
Steadham’s name echoed through the annals of swimming history as he obliterated the longstanding 1983 record in the 100 Fly, clocking in at a breathtaking 54.04 seconds. Not content with that, he rewrote his own 2021 record in the 100 Back, posting a remarkable time of 55.09 seconds. These remarkable achievements firmly cemented Steadham’s legacy in the school’s swimming lore, as he also surpassed the 2018 100 Fly record with his incredible performance.
However, Steadham wasn’t the sole record-breaker that day. Katie Countryman emerged as a force to be reckoned with, seizing the spotlight by smashing the 2016 200 Freestyle Girls’ Record with a blazing time of 1:58.58. Her prowess in the pool added to the tally of records falling in the wake of Bishop Chatard’s dominance.
Adding to the monumental accomplishments were collective efforts, notably the girls’ team 200 Free Relay’s (Margueritte Bourgeois, Hanna Ross, Gabby Herner, Katie Countryman) remarkable achievement. They shattered the school record from 2017 with a phenomenal time of 1:46.03, setting a new benchmark for future endeavors.
Beyond the record-breaking feats, there were a plethora of stellar performances. Hanna Ross showcased her prowess by clinching victory in the 100 Backstroke with a personal best time of 1:03.30. Alex Paz demonstrated sheer speed, claiming the 50 Free title with an impressive time of 23.93 seconds.
Margueritte Bourgeois and Alex Teed secured commendable positions, finishing 2nd and 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke, respectively. Gabby Herner and Elaine Dilts showcased remarkable stamina, securing 2nd and 3rd spots in the grueling 500 Freestyle. Dilts, in particular, continued her commendable streak by slashing her time to 6:24.94 in the 500 Free.
Noteworthy performances continued to unfold, with Adison Fleming achieving a significant milestone by breaking the 30-second barrier in the 50 Free with a time of 29.75 seconds.
Importantly, the team spirit reverberated through the stands, thanks to the unwavering support from teammates like Morgan Engelman and Zoe Williamson, who exemplified true sportsmanship by rallying behind their peers.

Last night, the BCHS swim team defeated Eastern Hancock in a dual meet that came down to the final relay. We would like to recap the information about our seniors and their future.
Honoring our BCHS Senior Swimmers for Senior Night January 11, 2024
Marguerite Bourgeois has been part of the swim team for four years. Her
favorite memory was last season when her relay first broke the school record
during the Sectional meet. Marguerite would like to thank her twin brother Max
who has always been there to push her since they started swimming together at
age 8. Marguerite plans to double major in musical theatre and psychology.
Congratulations Marguerite!Max Bourgeois has been on the team for four years. His fondest memory is
breaking school records in the relays during his sophomore year. Max would like
to thank Miss Sandy for Teaching him how to swim, all of his many coaches, and
especially his parents for their endless love and support. Max plans on pursuing
engineering after graduation. Congratulations Max!Hope Bultinck has been a four-year swimmer for the team. Her favorite
memories of the swim team were the winter break practices and the laughter of
the entire team together during the gift exchange. Hope would like to thank her
mom, dad and two sisters. Hope plans to study Kinesiology and Exercise
Science to become a physical or occupational therapist. Congratulations Hope!Helen Cline has been on the swim team for three years. When asked about her
favorite memory, Helen responded ‘When Morgan fell on the pool deck!’ Helen
would like to thank her parents and all of her coaches. After graduation, Helen
plans to pursue accounting at Purdue University. Congratulations Helen!Annemarie Creamer has been on the swim team for two years. Her favorite
memories include all of the bus rides to meets. She would like to thank all the
coaches, her parents and her teammates. After graduation, Annemarie plans to
study Environmental Science and Sustainability. Congratulations Annemarie!Morgan Engelman has been on the team for three years. Her favorite memory
was the City meet last year. She would like to thank her parents and all her
teammates. In college, Morgan plans to study nursing. Congratulations Morgan!Jacob Gates has been part of the swim team for two years. Among his favorite
memories are all of the meets. He would like to thank his coaches and
teammates. After graduation, Jacob plans to pursue his studies in the field of
Biology. Congratulations Jacob!Gabby Herner has been on the swim team for four years. Her favorite memory
was her sophomore year at the Sectionals meet and breaking records with her
relay team. Gabby would like to thank her parents, all of her coaches and
teammates. Gabby plans to study psychology in college. Congratulations Gabby!Ian Kolbus has been on the swim team for two years. His favorite memories
include pasta dinners and giving haircuts before Sectionals. He would like to
thank his mom and dad. After graduation, Ian plans on studying chemical or
mechanical engineering. Congratulations Ian!Annabel McCarthy-Young has been on the swim team for four years and loved
last year’s Schools with No Pools meet. Annabel would like to thank her parents
for their support. She plans to study public relations at Miami University after
graduation. Congratulations Annabel!Mary-Claire McCarthy-Young has been on the swim team for four years. Her
favorite memories were all of the team Culver’s runs. Mary-Claire would like to
thank her mom and all of the coaches over the years. In college, Mary-Claire
would like to pursue a major in the business field. Congratulations Mary-Claire!Grace Miller has been part of the team for four years. Her favorite memories
include placing in backstroke in the City meet and the post-swim meet Culver’s
trips. Grace would like to thank her parents and teammates for a great four
years. Grace plans to study international business in college and eventually
attend law school. Congratulations Grace!Charlie Park is in his first year on the swim team. His favorite memory has been
the team’s victory at the City Meet. Charlie would like to thank everyone who
convinced him to be part of the team this year. After graduation, he plans to study
finance. Congratulations Charlie!Jack Ross has been part of the team for one year. His best memory was winning
this year’s City meet. Jack would like to thank his parents and his sister for
getting him involved in swimming. After graduation, Jack plans to pursue studies

team memories include riding to the meets with friends. Jack would like to thank
his mom for all her support. After graduation, he plans to study civil engineering
or cybersecurity in college. Congratulations Jack!Theresa Surinak has been on the team for four years. One of her best
memories was this year’s City meet. Theresa would like to thank her parents and
all of the coaches. After graduation, she plans to major in architecture.

memories are talking and having fun with her teammates in the pool. Zoe would
like to thank her parents and Lucy for being her swim buddy. After graduation,
Zoe plans to study engineering. Congratulations Zoe!Anna Zyromski is a four-year member of the swim team. Her favorite memories
include cheering her teammates on at all the meets. Anna would like to thank her
mom and dad for their support. In college, Anna plans to study biology on a

I’m absolutely thrilled to share our successes at this year’s state meet! Jack Steadham and Donovan McMahon represented our team with such determination and skill.
Let’s start with Jack’s outstanding performance. Competing in the 50 and 100 free is no easy feat, especially in such a fiercely competitive environment. Making it back to the finals in the 50 free is a testament to his hard work and talent. With a time of 21.32, Jack secured 13th place in a field that was incredibly fast this year. We’re immensely proud of his achievement and know he gave it his all out there.
And let’s not forget Donovan’s remarkable accomplishment. Making it to the state meet in diving in Indiana is a huge achievement in itself. The level of competition is incredibly high, and Donovan’s dedication and skill brought him so close to the final round. Just being part of that competition is a testament to his talent and commitment to the sport.
I couldn’t be prouder of Jack and Donovan, and I’m grateful for the dedication and hard work they’ve shown throughout the season. They’ve represented our team with honor and have set a high standard for the future. Let’s continue to build on this success and keep pushing ourselves to new heights!

The team not only showcased incredible talent but also left a lasting mark on the record books. The dedication, hard work, and spirit demonstrated by each athlete were truly commendable.
Katie not only broke the team record but also secured her place at the state meet in the 100 fly. This marks a historic moment for our team, as it is the first time in 19 years that a girl from our program has made it to the state meet. Katie’s determination and skill have set a new standard for our team, and we couldn’t be prouder.
Our girls’ 200 Free relay team, consisting of Mary Claire McCarthy Young, Gabby Herner, Hanna Ross, and the aforementioned Katie Countryman, delivered an electrifying performance. They not only broke the school record but did so with an impressive time of 1:42.67. This achievement showcases the incredible teamwork and coordination among these talented swimmers.
There were several other standout performances that contributed to our overall success. Elaine Dilts continued to impress by dropping her 500 time to an impressive 6:17.36. Marguerite Bourgeois achieved a personal best in the 100 Breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:14.99. Hanna Ross demonstrated her speed in the 100 back, finishing with a swift time of 1:03.75.
In the 400 Free Relay, the team comprising Helen Cline, Meg Jennings, Sophia Reed, and Morgan Engleman played a crucial role in securing the team’s 4th place in a highly competitive sectional meet. Their collective efforts and determination earned valuable points for our team.
Special recognition goes to our talented diver, Theresa Surinak, who scored an impressive 235.70. Her skill and commitment to excellence continue to make a significant impact on our team.
I would also like to express my gratitude to Zoe Williamson and Hope Bultinck for their unwavering support. Your encouragement and dedication to our team do not go unnoticed, and we appreciate your contributions to our success.

The boys’ Swimming and Diving team performed well in the 2023 Sectional Final Meet. Placing 5th out of 13 teams is a great accomplishment; the team members had some impressive individual performances as well.
Congratulations to Jack Steadham for advancing to state in the 50 free and finishing 2nd, and to Donovan McMahon for finishing 5th in diving. The Boys Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay both had strong showings and finished in the top three.
Overall, the team had a lot of talented swimmers who contributed to the team’s success throughout the season. It’s great to see a group of individuals come together and achieve something collectively, and the boys’ team did just that. Congratulations to all the team members on a great season!

It was a great meet with lots of swimmers getting to swim in different events.

We had lots of great swims last night. A. Teed set a personal best in the 100 Breast. Also, M. McMahon dropped 9 seconds in the 500 free. One of the highlights of the meet was when The Trojans sang the National Anthem. A malfunction in the speaker system caused a long delay and the team took over to lead everyone through the lyrics.

The Bishop Chatard Girls swim team had an outstanding performance at the 2023 Sectional Meet at North Central High School, finishing 4th out of 12 teams. This was the best finish for the Girls team in recent history and the team put forth some impressive results.
The highlight of the meet was the Medley Relay, with Hanna Ross, Marguerite Bourgeois, Katie Countryman, and Gabriella Herner, breaking the school record with a time of 1:58:38. This was an exceptional accomplishment for the team.
Katie Countryman was a standout performer, breaking her own school record in the 50 Free with a time of 24.64 and placing 4th in the 100 Fly with a time of 1:00.38. Hanna Ross also had a strong showing, placing 7th in the 100 Free and 8th in the 100 Back. Marguerite Bourgeois finished 13th in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100 Breast. Other notable performances included Mary-Claire McCarthy Young placing 15th in the 200 IM, Gabby Herner placing 11th in the 500 Free, Ann Zyromski placing 16th in the 500 Free, and Elaine Dilts, Gabby Herner, Hanna Ross and Katie Countrymen placing 4th in the 200 free. The cheering was especially loud as the four senior girls closed out the last event: Gabi Pozsgai, Millie Teeple, Avery Nagel and Maisie McMahon who showed great technique and speed in the 400 Free Relay.
Diving was also a strong point for the Bishop Chatard Girls, with Grace Hurley qualifying for Regionals by taking 1st place at the Sectional Meet.
Overall, it was an incredible performance by the Bishop Chatard Girls swim team. Congratulations to all the girls on a fantastic meet and best of luck to Grace Hurley as she competes at Regionals and State Meet!

In our first meet of the season, boys came out strong against Decatur Central and Speedway High Schools. The boys finished second with 112 points. Donovan McMahon, Oliver Gebke, and Bobby Forsee took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in diving! Way to go boys! Other outstanding swims by Jack Steadham, Max Bourgeois, Aaron Loiselle, and Patrick Countryman, Danny O’Gara, Alex Paz, and Ethan Evans.

In this Double-Duel meet against Lawrence North and Brebuef, Chatard boys walked away with a 1st and 2nd place spot. Chatard 30 v Lawrence North 72. Chatard 52 v Brebuef 49.

With tough competition from 6 other schools, boys finished in 4th place. This meet is a non-traditional swim meet in that it only consists of different relays. Our 400 Medley Relay consisting of Jack, Danny, Aaron, and Max won with a time of 3.55.50 and set a new meet record. Danny, Aaron, and Max broke another meet record with a 1:30.01 in the 150 Breastroke Relay.

Friday night we met at Tech High School. It was a small crowd but made for a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Donovan and Bobby sought tough competition between themselves! Both boys went home with new personal records, Donovan took first with a score of 380.35 and Bobby second with a score of 239.85. The diver’s scores were taken and added to our final results for Saturday.

Having the meet start at 3:00 was, I believe, a blessing for us. Swimmers showed up to school upbeat, rested, and ready to go. We could not have predicted the meet to start any better than it did. The boys medley (Jack, Max, Aaron, and Patrick) placed first with the time of 1:42.77. This also beat the BCHS record of 1:42.81. WOW! Aaron Loiselle took first in 200 IM with a 2:07.53. Jack Steadham broke his own PR in the 50 with a new time of 22.06 with Patrick Countryman right behind him third with 23.53. Aaron placed second in the 100 fly with a 56.84. Patrick took second in 100 free with a 52.66 with Alex Paz rounding out top 8 with a 59.08. Max Bourgeois was right behind with a first place in the 500 with a 5:10.80. Boys 200 free (Patrick, Jack, Aaron, Max) rocked a first-place finish with a time of 1:33.26. Jack Steadham broke another personal record in the 100 back with a 55.32. Max Bourgeois took first in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.64 and Danny O’Gara scored third with a 1:09.05. The boys took an amazing second place.

Boys Swimming and Diving took second to Shelbyville and second to Batesville. With only 4 boys in attendance, they competed strong. Aaron Loiselle took 1st in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Fly. Jack Steadham took 1st in the 50 Free and 100 Back. Danny O’Gara took 3rd in the 200 Free and third in the 100 Free. Justin Garing took 6th in the 50 free and 4th in the 100 Breastroke. This was a double-duel meet.

After a year off, boys swimming and diving gave number 1 Brebeuf a tough go. Out of 21 teams, BCHS boys placed 2nd, which is a huge jump from our 8th place finish in 2020. Boys Medley Relay took first place to kick off the meet. Jack Steadham took first in the 50 free, continuing to break his own personal and school record, as well as in the 100 back. Donovan McMahon took first in diving, with Oliver Gebke taking second. Great job, boys!

Boys Swimming and Diving placed 4th overall, out of 12 teams in our 2022 Sectional Final Meet. We followed North Central, Franklin Central, and Lawrence North. The boy’s team did an outstanding job and had fantastic swims. Boys Medley Relay with Jack Steadham, Max Bourgeois, Aaron Loiselle, and Patrick Countryman ended their season with a personal best time in the event and getting a new school record time of 1:41.33. Jack Steadham broke his 50 free record with a time of 21.85 and finished 4th. Donovan McMahon finished 3rd, advancing on to Regionals, and Oliver Gebke rounded out the top 8. The 200 Free Relay, Max Bourgeois, Jack Steadham, Aaron Loiselle, and Patrick Countryman had the pleasure of picking the walk-out song since they were seated first in the event. They finished 3rd overall, with a new personal best and school record of 1:31.24. Great season, boys!

Girls competed in a tri-meet tonight against Decatur Central and Speedway High Schools. Madison Loiselle, Marguerite Bourgeois, Hanna Ross, and Gabriella Herner took 1st in the Medley Relay with Peyton Bean, Mia Todd, Mary-Claire McCarthy-Young and Jackie Figura right behind in 3rd. We had great dives from Hadley Bruce, Theresa Surinak, Annemarie Creamer and Annabel McCarthy-Young. It’s looking to be a great season!

In the Double-Duel meet against Lawrence North and Brebeuf, Chatard took second to both schools. Chatard 27 v. Lawrence North 75. Chatard 28 v. Brebeuf 74. Lawrence North brought the competition with strong swimmers and pushed us. Overall, we had fantastic swims for this early in the season. We had 23 girls participate in 50 Free, with girls scoring points in 5th, 6th, and 7th place. Jackie Figura (28.10) took 5th, Makenzie Massengale (30.74) 6th, and Sarah Christoff (30.74) 7th. They were followed by Anna Zyronski, Kaitlyn Selvaggo, Dierdre Hostelter, Maggie Timpe, Emmy Fox, Annabel McCarthy-Young, Grace Miller, Emma Welty, Gabi Pozsgai, Millie Teeple, Claire O’Gara, Jordan Geise, Annemaire Creamer, Helen Cline, Ali Pozsgai, Hope Bultinck, Catherine Joven, Alex Teed, Lucy Acklin, and Zoe Williamson. We had two amazing 200 Medley Relays kick off the meet. Grace Miller, Claire O’Gara, Mary-Claire McCarthy-Young, and Maddie Barber came in 2nd. Anna Zyronski, Emma Welty, Maisie McMahon, and Millie Teeple came in 3rd. Grace Hurley won diving and broke her 6-dive record with a score of 264.45. We ended the night with our 400 Free Relay. Alex Teed, Anna Zyronski, Gabi Pozsgai, and Helen Cline took 2nd while Zoe Williamson, Ali Pozsgai, Catherine Joven, and Lucy Acklin took 4th.

With tough competition from 6 other schools, girls finished in 6th place overall. This meet is a non-traditional swim meet in that it only consists of different relays. All girls had the opportunity to participate in one relay, at different levels. We took the opportunity to test the girls at different levels. Peyton Bean and Hanna Ross competed in the 1000 Free Relay; each girl swim a 500. They finished 4th in this event.

2021 marks our girls being back-to-back city champs! Having the meet start at 3:00 was, I believe, a blessing for us. Swimmers showed up to school upbeat, rested, and ready to go. We could not have predicted the meet to start any better than it did. Girls medley relay with Maddie Loiselle, Mia Todd, Hanna Ross, and Jackie Figura, kicked us off with a first-place finish, and a PR in the event of 2:02.38. Avery Nagel took third in the 200 Free with a 2:29.30. Maddie Loiselle took second in the 200 IM with a 2:30.14 while Mary-Claire McCarthy-Young took third with 2:45.19. Jackie Figura fought for second in the 50 free with a 28.10 with Peyton Bean rounding out the top 8 with a 29.99. Hanna Ross took a triumphant first in the 100 free with a 58.57. Gabriella Herner swam her way into first in the 500 with a 5:53.23. Girls 200 free relay with Jackie Figura, Mia Todd, Gabriella Herner, and Hanna Ross took first with a 1:49.92. Maddie Loiselle took first in 100 back with a 1:05.52. Marguerite Bourgeois took second in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:21.55 with Mia Todd coming in close behind with a 1:21.93 to take third. We wrapped up the meet with the girls 400 free relay with Gabriella Herner, Maddie Loiselle, Mary-Claire McCarthy-Young, and Hanna Ross taking first with a 4:06.75.

In this Double-Duel meet, Chatard girls swimming and diving walked away with both a 1st place finish and a tie. Chatard 49 v. Shelbyville 48. Chatard 49 v. Batesville 49. Grace Hurley started the meet with Diving and was the only representative for diving. We enjoyed seeing girls swim in different events, really pushing themselves to different comfort levels.

Girls place 3rd in our Circle City Conference Meet held at Brownsburg High School. Diver Grace Hurley rocked the boards with the best score of 485.85, breaking the record (set by herself in 2020) of 449.55.

Trojan Girls placed 3rd out of 21 teams in our 2022 Schools With No Pools Invite. We did not have this meet in 2021 due to Covid concerns and it was great to get the team back in IUPUI’s Natatorium. Both Medley Relay’s finished 2nd in their events. Anna Zyromski had an outstanding swim in the 50 and 100 Freestyle, taking a personal best in both events. Peyton Bean’s 500 also was set at a personal best. Great job to all the girls that participated!

This year’s JV Invite took place at Warren Central due to pool difficulties at Lawrence North. All the girls competing went best times in their event and had a successful day in the water! Girls placed 6th out of 12 teams in our 2022 Sectional Meet at North Central High School. Our Medly Relay with Maddie Loiselle, Mia Todd, Hanna Ross, and Gabriella Herner, took first with a time of 2:00.94. All girls went a personal best time in the relay and this became our best time for the season! Jackie Figura went a personal best time of 27.74 in the 50 Free. Peyton Bean dropped 13 seconds in her 500 Freestyle to go a personal best time of 6:35.75. Congratulations to all our girls on a fantastic season!

Junior Grace Hurley competed on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the Indiana University Natatorium Indianapolis in the State Swimming & Diving competition. In her third year qualifying for state, Grace finished 7th overall. Great job, Grace!
